Hey all,

Here is the study guide (I've numbered the questions to make it easier to reference a question):

[Study Guide for Midterm Examination\

1. The place, manner, and voicing of English phonemes

2. Some basic phonotactic rules, e.g. /ɪ/ cannot occur where? At the end of a syllable, the beginning of a syllable, after /t/, before /p/.

3. The definitions of: phoneme, allophone, obstruent, spectrogram, sibilant, complimentary distribution, formant

4. Which vowels have the highest and lowest F2 frequencies

5. The constraints of anatomy and physiology on the production of speech sounds.

6. The kinds of information conveyed by human speech.

7. The role of intonation in English

8. The role of the Bernoulli force in phonation

9. The acoustic characteristics of stops, approximants, nasals, fricatives

10. Key names in the history of phonetics

11. The physiological requirements of a sound, e.g. Is it correct to say that during the production of /f/, the lower lip touches the teeth, the tongue, the alveolar ridge, or the palate?

12. The physiology of: pitch change, increased loudness of voice, whisper, falsetto voice, affricates, approximants, nasals, respiration

You will need to identify:

13. Phonemes by description, e.g. voiceless dental fricative.

14. The phonemes of common English words, for example, “which of the following English words ends in a voiced sound.”

15. Lax vowels

16. English nonsense words from their phonetic spelling, e.g. how would /glib/ be spelled in English – glibe, kleeb, gleeb, or glip?

17. Actual English words from their representation in phonetics, e.g. /fiz/ is the phonetic spelling of – fizz, fees, fies, or fish.

18. You will need to understand the basic nature of phonological disorders.

I believe the answer to question #4 is that /i/ is the highest F2 frequency at 2500 Hz and /u/ comes in at the lowest (900 Hz).
Anyone get a different answer?
